Finally went to see King Arthur yesterday and I really like it. I'm not
100% convinced of Malcore's Sarmatian theory, but I'm not opposed to it
either, so for me, the film is a lot of fun.

There's an article in the latest edition of Entertainment Weekly this
week (cover story on Brando) however which has me kind of ticked off.
The DVD will be released with the R-rated version of the film included,
and from the writer's descriptions, the differences are gigantic.
Completely different ending, completely different presentation of
Gwenevere and lots of other changes. They were all edited out of course
in the effort to achieve the PG-13 rating for a more typical Disney
summer release, but I'm sick of two versions of movies - especially when
they are so drastically different.

I agree entirely.

Although - I'm glad to hear this news of the DVD because I felt the
theatrical release was very disjointed. There seem to be many dead ends in
the plot and various topics brought up out of the blue...crazy editing with
something other than the story in mind would go a long way towards
explaining this. I eagerly await the extended, naughty version...still with
it's historical issues I'm sure, but at least it will be more consistant
with itself, story-wise.

Not familiar with "Malcore", Deb mentioned this entity to me also, [sigh]
more research...

Sorry about the incorrect spelling - it's Linda Malcor. She and Scott
Littleton are co authors of the book "From Scythia to Camelot: A Radical
Reassessment of the Legends of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round
Table and the Holy Grail." It can be found on Amazon.com and other stores.

ok, thanks. good info.

any idea if anyone involved with the film has actually stated this was one
of their sources? I'm having trouble locating any admission of of any
reference of any kind from the filmmakers. hope it's not just me.

Dr. Malcor was a technical advisor on the film and probably appears in the
credits.

Don't think they have -- it's interesting that they chose Matthews as
the historical consultant, rather than Linda Malcor... However, in
the modern form this theory of Lucius Artorius Castus as Arthur owes
its popularity and dissemination to their work, which is the most
detailed argument. Worth reading if you've got the time but, IMHO, a
bit of a John Morris - I'd be inclined to go along with Bromwich et al
on L. Artorius Castus when she says that any identification is 'merely
wishful thinking'. There is a brief discussion with additional
references in the third part of
<http://www.arthuriana.co.uk/historicity/arthur.htm>; they is far more
in-depth discussion and criticism in the archieves of Arthurnet
<http://www.clas.ufl.edu/users/jshoaf/Arthurnet.htm>.

Cheers,

If you drill down through the official site for the film
(http://kingarthur.movies.go.com/main.html) you'll find a .pdf download
available of the full cast and crew. Linda is listed as "Research
Consultant" and John Matthews as "Historical Consultant."

Which explains the New Age sort of ending in the film.

Not entirely, Deb. According to that article I mentioned, the ending
was a late afterthought in the work to pare the film down to PG-13
status - original "director's cut" ending is completely different, which
we'll be seeing on the DVD.

HEY!!!! Lay off you guys!! It doesn't get to this side of the water for
another 15 days......I recognise the story is now international, but at
least leave those of us in the country (with apologies to Blake, Lloyd,
Moffat, Phillips, Keatman and all other 'regional Arthur' authors) where it
all started, to see the film and then DVD - without reading it here first!!

Kind regards

That's fine. I was going to wait until I could rent it, anyway.
