It seems no one is reading here any longer, however, just in case some
few are lurking around, I've got a thought.

Would you think that a web site for alt.legend.king-arthur might spur
more interest in the Newsgroup?

I'm a member of another Usenet Newsgroup for which I'm co web master of
the site <http://www.aspipes.org>. I can't swear that the site brings
folks to the Newsgroup, but it certainly doesn't hurt.

That site has existed under many iterations over the years and the
current new version is bare bones, still under construction. I also
have an even simpler web site of my own,
<http://www.canaltownanvil.org>. The CMS I'm using for the two sites is
Concrete5, and they're both hosted on <http://www.bluehost.com>.

If there's any interest, I'd be glad to put something together, if web
hosting fees and all could be worked out.

Just an idea - what thinkest thou?

Re: my comment on web hosting fees. I've got a freebie coming from
BlueHost for a domain name, so we'd save $10.00 right off the bat there.
They're also running a special this month on monthly fees - 6 bucks
instead of 7. I'd be willing to foot the bill for 6 months if someone
else would throw in for another 6 months to make it a one year experiment.

No.

I think it's a bad idea. Not only would it not help, it would probably
hurt by attracting spam.

Most people today, even most people with an internet connection, don't
even know what a newsgroup is. Many ISPs don't offer an NNTP service.
Sadly, discussion is now in blogs and forums. While these might have
some advantages in some cases, for most things newsgroups are far
superior.

Also, the newsgroup can be accessed over the web via Google Groups by
anyone who wants to do so.

Well, in one sense you're probably right. It might attract some spam.

But, in another sense, what the heck? If we get one new user for every
100 spammers, that's a plus, isn't it? One can always use filters and
etc., right? What Newsgroup doesn't get spammed? Hmmm...this one
doesn't actually...there's absolutely nothing happening here.

And you're also correct that most computer/Internet users anymore do not
know what Usenet is. What a shame. Wouldn't hurt to teach a little
history, would it? Yup, it can be a little difficult to find a way on
to Usenet Newsgroups... but really, how hard is it to click a mouse and
type some search words? Not as tough as digging ditches for sure, eh?

All right, I'll shut off the sarcasm. Honestly, my apologies.

Yes, the Newsgroup can be accessed via Google Groups. That does not
mean however, that the actual Usenet version should be discounted. It
kind of reminds me of war time situations where the more sophisticated
means of communication may go down, but Morse Code lives on. Usenet's a
little like that on the Internet - a gut basic system that is worth
continuing to support and use.

Phil, my sincere thanks for your thoughts. I think we agree more than
we disagree - your comment that, "...for most things newsgroups are far
superior." for instance is spot on. My thought about a web site is just
an idea for a modernized advertising draw, whatever it's downfalls.

Best regards,
Bert
