Discussion:
Arthurian Leech?

Sort of along the lines of the best/worst knight discussion, but with a
practical application for me. Linux advocate that I am, I am installing
Linux on a USB thumb drive that I can boot from by plugging it in to any
computer that supports boot from USB. When it boots up, it of course has
to choose a hostname for the machine. Here's the Arthurian part:

Which character from Arthurian legend is the biggest freeloader, the one
who takes credit for deeds not their own? Who consumes far more than
produces? It can be any character, not necessarily a knight.

The Later Arthur? Who rested on the laurels of others? Or am I being too
harsh on him?

Kind regards

Mordred, surely. Or Agravaine.

*Definitely* not Sir Kay. (Of course I have to defend him). IIRC, he
only once takes credit for a deed he did not achieve, in the rogue text
_Perlesvaus_, in which I have to confess he is an out-and-out villain
(and which proved such a fruitful source for my Kay novel). Don't
forget that in Malory, when Lancelot exchanged armour with Kay and cut
a swathe through aspiring jousters who thought they were challenging
Kay, Kay later described in front of all the court how all these
prisoners arriving at court had actually been defeated by Lancelot. Kay
was also notorious for taking on any new adventure that came to court;
true, he usually made a pig's ear of it, but nothing ever stopped him
trying. (Go, Kay!)

Leaving chivalrous deeds aside, Kay was Arthur's seneschal, which means
that he was the man who ran Camelot. Without Kay there would have been
no tournaments, no magnificent feasts, no fabulous clothes, armour,
etc. Reading between the lines, he must have worked his socks off.

In reply to the original question, I'd suggest Tristram. How many
knight-hours were wasted in looking for him, as Phyllis Ann Karr points
out? How little did he really achieve?

Best regards,
Cherith

It was either yourself or Phyllis Karr who pointed out that Kay's rough
manner can be attributed to his being the knight of Arthur's household
charged with the allies' boys who were hostaged, er squired to Arthur's
household for the purpose of being trained to be knights. He was their
drill sargeant. Read Kurtz's Deryni novels and compare Kay's treatment of
"Beaumains" with how Kelson's uncle Nigel treats the noble boys of
Kelson's household.

Paul, where does your signature come from? Google produced no results for
its source.

Oh, and I went with Agravaine for naming my USB Linux install. Thanks for
the suggestions!

It's a line from the work of a fellow webcartoonist, Phil Redmon. A Google
search will have brought no joy because it's not text text but text
imbedded in a graphic. Phil's website is at:
