Just thought I'd point out the following, if anyone is still checking
this group....
O.J. Padel, 'Geoffrey of Monmouth and the Development of the Merlin
Legend' in _Cambrian Medieval Celtic Studies_ 51 (Summer, 2006),
pp.37-65.
This basically takes the Jarman model of the legend's development and
attempts to solve some problems within it, so that the pre-Geoffrey
Myrddin was a prophetic fiction (possibly linked with poetic
inspiration) associated with Carmarthen BUT had no biography before
Geoffrey -- everything else (e.g. Arthuret, Lailoken etc) is Geoffrey's
own contribution to the mix [Jarman had this stuff being linked in
pre-Geoffrey].
Cheers,
Tom Green
