The question is a good deal more difficult than you think. The original
Arthur (if there actually was one) lived at the end of the Roman Empire.
His story has been built upon ever since, and sometimes, as in the late
1100s and early 1200s, many writers were adding new material all at
once, some of which was picked up by other writers, and some of which
was forgotten. For a while, everyone who wanted to write a story about
either love or war grafted it onto the Arthur story. (There are even
Jewish stories about King Arthur, written in both Hebrew and Old
Yiddish.) In the 20th century, T. H. White used the legends as the basis
of a vaguely pacifist novel, which Lerner and Lowe then reworked into a
musical comedy, while Charles Williams used them as the basis of some
extraordinarily difficult, yet very rewarding, mystical poetry. I myself
am in the cast of the New Jersey Renaissance Kingdom, where we do an
original Arthurian story every year.

"The pathetic hope that the White House will turn a Caligula into a
Marcus Aurelius is as naïve as the fear that ultimate power inevitably
corrupts."

Yes, but being well-known does not necessarily = well-respected or
trustworthy... Why not get Chris Snyder's _Exploring the World of
King Arthur_, which is written by a genuine academic (rather than
a.... *ahem*) and covers most of the issues reasonably well and in a
readable manner?
