Cadbury?
(too old to reply)

I've been reading some of the old material by Geoffrey Ashe and Leslie
Alcock on the Cadbury hill fort in Somerset and its possible status as
a major stronghold in the 'Arthurian era'

Can anybody tell me if this is still the general view of Cadbury's
status, or have academic opinions on it changed completely? Is it
still regarded as having been a major British fortress in the late
5th/early 6th century, or not? Thanks.

It's just one of a number of re-occupied hill-forts from that time.
Whether it is more sigificant than other any site cannot be proved.
People can speculate all they like about who owned it, the building
techniques, etc., but in the end there is no definitive answer.

I thought it was considered to be unusual considering its great size
and the scale of its fortifications though? I wasn't speculating about
who owned it, but whether the size and scale of the fort was still
considered significant. And if not, why not?

If I may be so bold, try http://www.arthuriana.co.uk/n&q/artharch.htm
, which has several recommendations for further reading (especially L.
Alcock _Cadbury Castle: Somerset. The Early Medieval Archaeology_
(University of Wales Press, Cardiff 1995))
