Hi,

Welcome to the newsgroup and welcome to the mystery of King Arthur.

You ask the most divisive question in all of Arthurian study; Did King
Arthur Really exist? I am afraid that there is no decisive answer to that
question. Many people believe that there was an historical basis for Arthur,
while others believe that it is simply myth.

I believe that the best thing that you can do is to read what you can about
Arthur and what the experts say and ten form your own conclusions.

To that end, I would suggest that you check out the web-site below. You will
find lots of interesting information about Arthur, his legends, and his
history.

Hello Morgane and welcome to ALKA. I envy you your homeland - Brittany
is rife with Arthurian tradition!

There are thousands of websites with information on the Arthurian
traditions - a Google search will overwhelm you, so I won't bother
listing any at the moment. I'd just suggest one thing in your thinking
about Arthur however. Whether he existed or not, the stories about him
are more legend than myth. Myths tend to be about Gods or other
ethereal beings. Legends are about humans. Generally, Arthur is taken
to have been a human.

Did he exist? Probably not in the sense of a King, but there may have
been someone who lead a resistance movement upon whom the legends are
based. The recent movie from Touchstone Pictures, "King Arthur",
starring Clive Owen, presented a theory about Arthur that is tantalizing
- that he was a Roman in charge of a group of Sarmatian knights assigned
to duty in Britain at the time of Rome's withdrawal from the Island.

There are many other theories about who he might have been, all equally
interesting.

Hope you enjoy the group and that your research spurs some good
discussion here.

Best regards,
Bert

If he didn't really exist, would the legends be any more or less
inspirational?

In what ways do you find the tales inspirational? Are there certain
characters that inspire you or just the idea of chivalry and honor in its
bloodiest form?

Me too. But I was asking what *inspired* the person i was responding too. I
too am inspired by the tales, specifically Malory, but more so artistically
because I enjoy the prose and it inspires me to write in similar prose. I am
currently composing a tale in this tone called, "The Horrible Knight" about
a knight that partakes in the brutal custom of turning his vanquished foes
into "battle brides."

I think it's a little bit of both. Perhaps the form of chivalry is a bit
too bloody for modern tastes, but the ideas behind it can still be valid
in some forms. Plus, since it's not a "happily ever after" legend, I find
there are basic human elements to relate to with many of the characters
(e.g., Arthur dealing with betrayal of his son and friends, Lancelot's
moral dilemma, Galahad's "rising above" the world in a sense). And with
the tragedy comes an element of universal hope as well.
